Learn to make AMVs

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on such things as software for making AMVs.

I'm interested in making an AMV for AnimeNext 2009 but i'm a noob to this (tried once before with no experience and all i got was an Epic Fail).

Any special techniques or anything i need to know about?
